Pattern for Reusable Crocheted Market Bag

I love to go to the local Farmer's Market to get fresh fruits and veggies, aren't they just DELICIOUS?! So, I decided to crochet a bag that I could use - I had a short list of what I wanted from it. Strong and sturdy, fully washable, and expandable. So here's the bag I came up with and wanted to share the pattern here with you so you could enjoy it too - happy crocheting! You'll see from how the top is made that I got the idea for this design from making a little top for my granddaughters. Quit laughing! haha You know you are.

Make one, two, three...how ever many you want. I have a set of three and take them for regular grocery shopping too.

SO, here we go -

Supplies needed:

Worsted Weight 100% Cotton Yarn - approx. 250 yards (I wish I could get that closer for you, but it will depend upon how you crochet - if you use Lily Sugar and Cream I would get three skeins. You can always return/exchange extra or make something else with the leftovers OR buy one pound cones and make several!)

Size H crochet hook (if you crochet tight, you might want to use a larger hook)

Safety pin, you don't have to have this but if you get lost with where to join rounds it really helps to mark that first stitch.

Gauge - who cares, it's a market bag.

Stitch abbreviations you'll need to know:
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
sk - skip

Row 1 - ch 90, slip stitch to first stitch to make a circle. Make sure you don't twist the chain as it's your foundation row.

Row 2 - ch1, sc in came stitch as joining slip stitch and in each chain around. Join with a slip stitch to first sc. (90sc)

Row 3 - Repeat Row 2 (90sc)

Row 4- (Here is where you'll be dividing stitches for the handles)
ch1, sc 12 (first sc should be in same stitch as joining), ch 15, skip 21 sc, sc 24, ch 15, skip 21, sc 12, join with slip stitch to first sc.

Row 5 - ch1, sc in same stitch as joining and in each sc and chain around (78sc), join with a slip stitch to first sc.

Row 6 & 7 - ch 1 sc in same stitch as joining and in each sc around, join with a slip stitch to first sc. (78sc)

Row 7 - ch4, skip 1sc, *dc 1, ch 1, sk 1*, repeat from *to* until you reach the end of the row. Slip stitch to 3rd chain of the beginning ch 4.

Row 8 through 22 - slip stitch to middle of 1st ch 1 space, ch 4, *dc in next chain 1 space, ch 1*, repeat from * to * until you reach the end of the row. Slip stitch to 3rd chain of the beginning ch 4.

Finishing bottom. Turn bag inside out, lay front and bag even together and sc the bottom closed. Weave in ends, turn right side out...and YIPPEE!!! You have your first reusable bag.

Make sure to post here if you try the pattern and let me know what you think. Hopefully I didn't make any errors - but if I did please let me know so I can write corrections.

  1. I recently learned to crochet and was looking for some "easy, simple" instructions for a market bag... Love this one... and I'm still laughing over your comment "Gauge - who cares, it's a market bag. " Thank you!
